The Black First Land First Movement condemns the arrest of it’s North West Provincial Coordinator Comrade Plaatjie since Saturday, 12 September 2015. The police has arrested community leaders in Ventersdorp and in Tlokwe in the North West Province following a protest march against the anti democratic forced merger between the Ventersdorp and Tlokwe municipalities. This merger is rejected by the people and has no popular support. It is a merger to save the ANC from a certain and clear defeat in the upcoming 2016 municipality elections.
The ANC has already lost the by-elections in Tlokwe – it is only holding on to power through rigging the elections. The matter is currently before the Constitutional Court. The ruling party, realising that it will lose the coming elections, seeks to boost its electoral support artificially by incorporating Ventersdorp into Tlokwe. The people have responded with a resounding NO! Thousands turned up for the protest march last Friday and subsequently the municipality buildings in Ventersdorp were reportedly put on fire by unknown people.
The anger of the community is justifiable! The ANC arrogance and heavy handedness has hardened the community’s resolve to fight this blatant act of abuse by any means necessary. Comrade Plaatjie is one of the community leaders and only acts within the mandate of the people. He, like all the other arrested community leaders, are not criminals. What is clear is that the police are being used by politicians just like they were used in Marikana.
We demand the immediate unconditional release of all the community leaders in Ventersdorp together with our leader, Comrade Plaatjie.
